How do I know which hazards exist in my workplace?

Usually, workplace hazards are identified by a supervisor during a risk assessment. Based on their findings, they are able to determine what specific topics employees need to be trained on. Risk assessments are special processes performed by supervisors to mitigate hazards on the job. They involve several steps:

  1. Inspect the workplace for safety and health hazards.
  2. Group the hazards into categories.
  3. Identify controls that will mitigate the hazards.
  4. Prioritize the hazards according to which is most dangerous.
  5. Apply control measures according to hazard prioritization.

With this in mind, it’s clearly the supervisor and employer’s role to identify hazards and implement controls – one of which is safety training. So, supervisors and employers should be able to direct employees to which safety courses they need. And, for supervisors and employers, they make these determinations by performing risk assessments.

You should purchase safety courses to address any and all safety and health hazards that you may face on the job. Whether you work in an office or in a facility housing dangerous chemicals, we have safety courses to address those hazards. Additionally, our blog posts offer great secondary information on such things as the 20 20 20 rule and safety moments. Don’t forget to conduct safety moment meetings often in addition to beginner and refresher training.

Common Courses Questions

Everyone wants to do their job well. Even more importantly, though, everyone wants to go home at the end of their workday healthy and safe. While years of experience can qualify you for the job, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re being the most efficient, healthy, or safe at work.

Training on the job can help you learn newer, more efficient ways to get your tasks done. Further, it can help you learn work practices to maintain personal health and safety on the job.

Many industries require that employees receive OSHA Aligned training before being allowed to start a new job task. The reality is that there will always be dangers to your safety and health at work. Even office employees – who work a less hazardous job – are at risk of developing musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) from sitting in a stationary position for too long.

With that in mind, training can help you to improve your quality of work life and home life.

OSHA – or the Occupational Safety and Health Administration – regulates employee safety and health throughout the United States. This regulatory organization is responsible for 130 million workers who are employed at more than 8 million workplaces around the U.S.

So, in short, yes. OSHA applies to every employee who works in the U.S., except for:

  • Self-employed people
  • Immediate family of farm employers
  • Employees who are under the jurisdiction of another federal agency

If OSHA applies to nearly every employee in the U.S., you may be wondering what safety and health training you need for your job. There is no easy answer. Training needs vary based on the type of job tasks employees regularly perform on the job.

Additionally, OSHA has specific regulations that dictate what training employees need who are working in specific industries. But, in other less regulated industries, there may be little to no guidance on required training.

Rather than focus on the minimum of what is required, let’s instead ask ourselves an important question. What might an employee need to know to be able to perform their job efficiently, safely, and healthfully? The answer to this question will help you determine what training courses you need.

Many of our online courses can be completed in an hour to an hour and a half. Of course, this also depends on your pace and the course itself. We offer several robust courses that certify employees who work around very specific job hazards, such as hazardous waste or construction. These robust courses can take anywhere from 4 to 40 hours, depending on the subject matter.

However, users do not need to complete their online course in one sitting. In fact, our self-paced learning model allows employees to exit the course and come back to it whenever they want. They don’t have to worry about losing their progress.

This feature is especially ideal for employees who want to navigate through the course slower than the narrator does. Users are free to go back to any previously-viewed information and review what they’ve learned. This review can help them prepare for quizzes and the final exam at the end of the course.

We get a lot of questions about safety training programs in the workplace. Here are a few articles we’ve written on the subject and some answers to common business questions as they pertain to safety.
